Victron Energy Lead Carbon Battery
The Victron Energy Lead Carbon Battery offers enhanced performance compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, especially in partial state-of-charge (PSoC) applications. By incorporating a lead carbon composite in the negative plate, this battery reduces sulfation, improves charge acceptance, and extends cycle life.
Key Advantages:
- Improved Partial State-of-Charge (PSoC) Performance: Reduces sulfation and enhances battery longevity.
- Higher Efficiency: Lower charge voltage reduces energy losses and minimizes corrosion on the positive plate.
-
Extended Cycle Life:
- ≥ 500 cycles @ 100% Depth of Discharge (DoD).
- ≥ 1000 cycles @ 60% DoD.
- ≥ 1400 cycles @ 40% DoD.
Common Failure Modes of Conventional VRLA Lead-Acid Batteries:
- Softening or Shedding of Active Material: Frequent cycling reduces cohesion of the positive plate due to the transformation between lead oxide (PbO2) and lead sulfate (PbSO4).
- Positive Plate Corrosion: Accelerated corrosion at the end of the charge process due to the presence of sulfuric acid.
- Negative Plate Sulfation: Lead sulfate crystals harden and become impenetrable, leading to decreased capacity.
Lead Carbon Battery Performance:
- Tested to withstand at least 500 full 100% DoD cycles.
- Requires a recommended charge rate of ≤ 0.2C.
- Lower charge voltage increases efficiency and reduces thermal stress.
Recommended Charge Voltage:
Cycle Life | Depth of Discharge (DoD) |
---|---|
≥ 500 cycles | 100% DoD (discharge to 10.8V, rest for 2 hours, recharge at 0.2C20) |
≥ 1000 cycles | 60% DoD (3-hour discharge at 0.2C20, followed by recharge) |
≥ 1400 cycles | 40% DoD (2-hour discharge at 0.2C20, followed by recharge) |
