Victron Energy Meters – Venus OS Compatible
Venus OS supports multiple energy meters for monitoring PV inverters, AC generators, and grid connections in ESS (Energy Storage System) installations. These meters integrate with a GX device for real-time data display and system control.
Energy Meter Applications:
- Measure the output of a PV inverter.
- Monitor an AC generator (Genset).
- Function as a grid meter in an ESS installation.
- Measure AC loads within an energy system.
Compatible Energy Meters:
Victron supports both Victron-stocked and third-party meters such as Carlo Gavazzi and ABB. The meters connect to GX devices via VE.Can, Ethernet, or RS485.
Connection Options:
- VE.Can (Recommended): Direct connection between the VM-3P75CT and a GX device, independent of a network.
- Ethernet: Used by the VM-3P75CT and EM24 Ethernet meters. This is beneficial if an existing network is available but depends on network stability.
- RS485: Requires a wired RS485-to-USB interface or a Zigbee wireless connection to the GX device.
Choosing the Right Energy Meter:
1. Select the Number of Phases:
- Single-phase connection: Use an ET112 or a three-phase meter in single-phase mode.
- Three-phase connection: Use a three-phase meter such as the VM-3P75CT or ET340.
- PV Inverter measurement: Use a three-phase meter for a three-phase inverter or multiple single-phase meters.
2. Consider the Maximum Current Per Phase:
- If current exceeds the meter rating, use an Energy Meter with current transformers.
- Most PV inverters provide direct readout through Victron and do not require an additional energy meter.
3. Select the Connection Type:
- VE.Can: The easiest option, providing a direct connection between the VM-3P75CT and GX device.
- Ethernet: Suitable for networked installations but requires a stable network.
- RS485: Used for most other energy meters via USB or Zigbee.
Energy Registration Methods:
- Vector Registration: Used by the EM24, EM5XX, and ABB meters (preferred in Germany, Austria, and most countries).
- Arithmetic Registration: Used by all other meters.
- VM-3P75CT: Offers configurable options for vector, arithmetic, or absolute registration.
Recommended Energy Meters:
Model | Connection | Phases | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
VM-3P75CT | VE.Can / Ethernet | Three-phase | Plug & play with GX device |
EM24 Ethernet | Ethernet | Three-phase | Network-dependent |
ET112 | RS485 | Single-phase | Can be used for utility or PV inverter measurement |
ET340 | RS485 | Three-phase | Alternative to using multiple ET112 meters |
EM5XX Series | RS485 | Three-phase | Third-party Carlo Gavazzi meters |
